Baristanet Rips Patch

Baristanet's Debra Galant tore into the competition in this interview she did with StreetfightMag.com (via Romenesko). Here's the money quote:

"How do you regard Patch, generally? Do you think a company like…

Montclairs's Mystique Affirmed. Recent Home Buyers Prove It Exists!

I've always thought that Montclair had a certain mystique. I've lived in and around Montclair for all of my 60+ years, and I'm amazed at how so many people, from so many places, speak so fondly of Montclair.

However, recently I locked horns with a Montclair skeptic. He was interested in buying a home in the west Essex area, but said he thought that Montclair's reputation was undeserved. A scuffle ensued...not really...but I took what he said as a challenge to prove him wrong.…

Media War in Montclair: Baristanet Pulls Ahead

UPDATE: 9/3/10, 10am

In the battle to see who covers the DeCamp strike best, Baristanet pulls ahead. As I wrote yesterday, though they are the horse to beat, Baristanets more frequent coverage of the strike was edged out by Montclair Patch's reporting depth. Not so today. Baristanet dug deeper. Their posts yesterday on…

Baristanet vs Montclair Patch vs The Montclair Times: Who's Coverage of the Decamp Strike is Better?

Written at about 10am, 9/2/10... so feel free to update this in the comments if the coverage has changed...

These are exciting times to be in the media business in Montclair. It's just like the golden age of newspapers, but on a much smaller scale. Instead of the Herald Tribune vs the NY Times vs The World, it's Baristanet vs Montclair Patch vs The Montclair Times...

The recent Decamp strike seems to be the first true standard measure…

Take it to the Streets

“Take it to the Streets”

Pedestrians and Joggers Beware: Watch your step! In a humble effort to enlighten the Montclair Police Department as to why people may choose to walk on the street in areas where a sidewalk is available, I will elucidate a few of the most compelling reasons why people may chose to abandon the sidewalks.

The mere presence of a sidewalk does not imply that it is suitable for walking, jogging or pushing a stroller. One condition that seems to be ubiquitous… Continue

Spammers using this site

Please be aware of a new "member" JEN THOMAS who culled my email address to send me spam. If she's not a spammer, then perhaps she's just a lonely person who doesn't understand netiquette.
As for a friend request from yout, well, no Jen.
Anyone else get email from her? I have one nerve left and everyone is on it. Have a great weekend, all.

John Hughes, 59

Just heard John Hughes died.

If you're between about 33 and 43 and grew up in America then chances are John Hughes had an effect on you and the way you saw the world at that time. He was THE writer/director of the 80s. For those of us either in high school, jr high... or soon to enter, John Hughes played to us... and pretty much all of us loved it. He was kind of the Judd Apatow of his day, but less raunchy and a bit more subversive. Take a look at this run between 1983 and… Continue

A Quote Worth Reading from the Atlantic... Re: The BIG Problem With Online Avertising

THE ATLANTIC: “Journalism’s Problem Isn’t Gawker. It’s Advertising.”

August 3, 2009

BYLINE: MARC AMBINDER

“Bill Grueskin, the dean of academic affairs at the Columbia Journalism School and the former managing editor of WSJ.com, writes in Paid Content that the death of journalism is really a masquerade for the death of advertising, or at least the way we know it. Grueskin writes:

‘This is a huge problem facing journalism (and more generally, media),… Continue

Looking for personal finance writers...

Hi... if you're comfortable writing/blogging about personal finance and money/life issues in general then I might have some freelance work for you. I'm managing editor at MainStreet.com and we're always looking for interesting stories about the intersection of life and money... job stories, retirement stories, budget, banking... etc. Ideally these stories will have a solid news hook, very catchy headline and/or and really compelling human interest angle. Bottom line, they've got to be… Continue

Excellent Job Board at Mediaite.com

Don't know if any of you have heard about Dan Abrams new media site Mediaite.com (basically his take on Romenesko), but in addition to having some pretty good content, they partnered with Indeed.com to create an excellent journalism job board. It's basically an aggregator but it finds good stuff. Check it out.

Why didn't The Times pick Montclair for one of its "hyper-local" websites?

Can someone please explain to me why Maplewood has been selected as the primary battleground in the experiment to create viable hyperlocal news sites? Montclair, with its abundance on media pros, seems like a no brainer, and I'm sure Baristanet has the traffic to prove it (maybe that's why the competition is staying away).

Maplewood, on the other hand, has:

- The… Continue
